Technical content writing has to do with adopting a particular writing style used in a number of diverse fields. From Computer hardware, Chemistry, Finance to Biotechnology, we often talk of technicalities. Technical content writing is a way by which a technical writer explains technology and related fields to both technical and non-technical audiences. For example, technical content writing could be used to explain how a software library works to a programmer, or the usage of a piece of electronic device to the consumer. Information from an existing documentation and from an expert is needed to write a good technical content.
A subject matter expert is an expert on the topic which the technical writer intends to write on. Unless producing good technical documentation on the required topic, technical content writers are sometimes considered different from the experts in the field. Experts are often regarded as Subject Matter Experts [SMEs]. A good technical content writer should be able to employ strong language and good teaching skills in delivering the needed technical content writing.. In this article, my motif will be to explain how to write good technical content writing.
To start with, a good technical content will be considered excellent only if it does not contain elements of ambiguity such that, the readers must understand it without having to decode difficult terminologies. What I mean here is that a well-written technical content should present required information about a subject matter in a clear, useful format for the audience to understand. Unnecessary jargons and misleading information should not be in a good technical content. Let me base my illustration on the writing of a technical content on baking a special kind of bread which is first of its kind in the market.
In the first place, the technical needs to consider his audience and his source of information when writing his recipe. When I say his audience, I mean the general public who enjoy bread baking or professional bread bakers. The technical writer in this case can follow a rough draft if available. Better still, the technical writer can as well consult the subject matter expert, whom in this case, a professional baker.
Indeed, from all ramifications a good technical writing must be written in a simple, clear language and must be intended to clarify technical jargons. In other words, the content should present useful information in a manner that is easily understood by the intended audience and not obscure useful information. A poorly written technical content misleads with technical jargons and leaves grey areas on the minds of the intended audience let me also state here that it is vital to know who your audience are. That will help you choose a language that will be appreciated by them!
If you really want to succeed well at it, don’t forget that it is the duty of the technical content writer to source for the information to write on. As the case may be in the above example, the technical content writer can right down the recipe, and later interview the Subject Matter Experts [professional bakers] for more ideas. He or she needs to know the kind of audience needing the work. So, technical content writer creates the ideal style and pattern, replacing and explaining words in the source materials. After that, he or she should seek clarifications from the expert. The expert can edit the drafts, make the necessary corrections and offers suggestions on how to improve the quality of the content. The technical writer gets it back and re-writes the rough draft, in line with the advice of the expert. The document is then corrected for any grammatical errors and other typographical errors. Lastly, it is given a final review by a third party, usually an experienced editor, before being approved for printing or submitted to a private client as the case may be.

Technical content writing is a form of communication used to convey a particular piece of information to a particular audience for a particular purpose. You can liken it to be a form of expository essay on technical subjects, as well as scientific ones. The goal of the technical content writer is to present complex technical topics and instructions in formats that are clear and simple for the audience to follow and carry out a particular task in a particular way. For one to write a successful technical content, understanding of the audience, which is the key to all technical writing, should never be under estimated! I have learnt not to play this down in my dealings over the years.
